Amazon Pulls the Plug on Chime, Will Use Zoom Moving Forward
Amazon has announced plans to discontinue its unified communications service, Amazon Chime. The company will cease accepting new customers starting February 19, 2025, and will end support for the service, including its Business Calling features, on February 20, 2026.
Existing customers can continue to use Amazon Chime's features, such as scheduling and hosting meetings, managing users, and utilizing the administration console, until the end-of-support date. However, the Amazon Chime SDK, which allows developers to integrate communication capabilities into their applications, will remain unaffected and continue to be available.
In light of this transition, Amazon recommends that customers explore alternative collaboration solutions. Suggested options include AWS Wickr, Zoom, Webex by Cisco, and Slack by Salesforce.
This move aligns with Amazon's broader strategy to streamline its services and focus on core business areas. Recently, the company designated Zoom as its official meeting application for internal use, phasing out Amazon Chime due to its limited external adoption. Additionally, Amazon has begun integrating Microsoft's 365 productivity tools into its operations, providing employees with access to services like Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Customers currently using Amazon Chime are advised to begin transitioning to alternative services well before the February 2026 deadline to ensure a smooth migration and to delete any data associated with Chime prior to its shutdown.
